HOLD ON
The leaves came falling down and choked the ground
The chill of winter hung the air
In the yard the men were growing old
We'd been there far too many years
We couldn't run and we couldn't hide
Although we smoked a joint or two
Smokey he said, "Listen, never mind
I know just what we need to do:"
Hold on, we must hold on
We gotta make it through the night
Hold on we'll be free fore long
We're gonna spread our wings and fly
The rain came pouring down the night we left
We thought the guards would never hear
The lightening flashed out all around the decks
It touched the earth and lit our fears
We tied some blankets and we made a rope
We thought it strong enough to last
But Smokey, he was the biggest man and
It broke just before the blast
Hold on, please hold on
We cried to Smokey in the night
Hold on, please be strong
You're gonnna be all right
Smokey fell before the guards arrived
The led us all back to our cells
The funeral was held out in the yard
Just like we all returned to hell
We didn't weep and we didn't cry
We never tried again to flee
But in the mornings just before the dawn
We still hear Smokey as he pleads:
Hold on, please hold on
You gotta make it through the night
Hold on, you must be strong
You're gonna be all right
Hold on, we must be stong
We're gonna spread our wings and fly
Hold on, we'll be free fore long
We're gonna see the light
